此抗体可以和人的 GFAP 反应，而与其它的中间丝蛋白（如角蛋白、波形蛋白、结蛋白和神经丝）无交叉反应。一般情况下，正常和肿瘤性的星形胶质细胞、神经胶质细胞、室管膜细胞反应阳性，而神经节细胞、神经元、成纤维细胞、少突胶质细胞和这些细胞来源的肿瘤反应阴性。GFAP 主要用于星形胶质瘤等中枢系统肿瘤的研究。
